SEO Tip Jar – Breaking the trend

Leading on from the last post on the benefits of working with trends, let’s not forget the importance of avoiding replicating someone else’s idea. Keeping up to date with the latest trend can tempt SEO workers to jump on the band wagon. However, avoiding trending SEO techniques can be just as important as avoiding key word saturation. It’s not all meta tags now people!

Back in 2005 SEO was still taking baby steps. It became apparent that the latest SEO trend was to stick in as many key words as was physically (or digitally, however you see it) possible. But this did more harm than good. Google got wise to the act and realised that its users were suffering, making it difficult for them to find anything of quality.

Seven years on and SEO has learnt from its mistakes, focusing on good quality content, balanced with more selectively chosen key words and meta tags to help both the business and the web user. Yet this should serve as a warning. If history has taught us anything it is that it often repeats itself. Suffice to say that it is not impossible for SEO companies to slip into a new trend and forget what their true purpose is. But, by keeping an eye on these trends and judging when to use them to benefit and when to break away from them to be more distinctive, excellent SEO services will remain intact. Breaking the mould is a cliché that would serve the SEO campaigner well but please, avoid writing clichés, it’s been done…
